Gas companies in spain

There are five main gas companies in Spain. On most occasions, these companies do not only deal with gas, but also with other energies. Here is the basic information (source: wapedia) and the link to their pages in English.

Ø             Compañía Española de Petróleos

Compañía Española de Petróleos or simply CEPSA (Spanish Company of Petroleums) is one of the largest energy companies in Spain, founded in 1929, which operates in several European countries as well as in Algeria, Canada, Morocco, Brazil, and Panama. The company currently produces around 260,000 barrels/day and has a refining capacity in three refineries of 21 million tonnes/year.

CEPSA is also an electricity supplier having a joint-venture with Unión Fenosa that operates a natural gas-fired combined cycle power plant of 750 MW.

Ø                 Enagás

Enagás, S.A. (Empresa Nacional del Gas, BMAD: ENG) is a Spanish energy company which owns and operates the nation's gas grid. The firm also owns and operates three liquefied natural gas regasification terminals in the country, at Huelva, Barcelona and Cartagena. A fourth, at the port of El Musel, is currently being constructed and is scheduled to open in 2011. The chairman of Enagás is Antonio Llardén Carratalá and the firm's headquarters are located in Madrid.

The company was founded in 1975 by the Spanish Government with the aim of creating a nationwide network of gas pipelines. After privatisation in 1994, Gas Natural acquired a controlling stake in the company. However since demerging Enagás in 2002, Gas Natural has gradually decreased its stake in the company to 5%, which has been the maximum allowed for any shareholder by the Government after 30 December 2006. The state-owned holding company Sociedad Estatal de Participaciones Industriales (SEPI) also holds 5% of Enagás. As of the end of 2007, approximately 70% of the company's shares are on the open market.
